Crowns Vs Veneers

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?

Crowns vs Veneers

Which option is the best for you? Crowns vs Veneers?

If you are considering ways to restore your teeth and enhance your smile, then you have a few great options. Both alternatives are popular and have great results.

Although both treatments will improve the appearance of your smile, there are some key differences between them which means it is important to choose the right option for your situation and get your dentist to advise you. Often your mouth and the health of your teeth will determine whether you can have a crown or veneers, and this can be determined by taking x-rays to see below the bone line and between the teeth. This is also something that you will discuss with your dentist.

Both crowns and veneers are forms of dental restoration. In other words, they both strengthen the teeth in different ways. They work by adding a layer to an existing tooth to improve its appearance and function.

The main difference between a veneer and a crown is how much of the original tooth is removed, how thick the material covering the tooth is, and how much of the tooth is covered. Both the crowns and veneers are effective in improving the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. But if you can have a veneer instead of a crown it is far better for the long-term health and strength of the virgin tooth.

A veneer is usually made from a wafer – thin porcelain and it is in-fact the same porcelain that you use to make a crown. A veneer is bonded onto the front of the tooth. The porcelain is colour – matched to your natural teeth. Once again if you want to whiten your teeth you need to do this before you choose the colour for your veneers.

Veneers are strong but brittle, and that is why sharp or repeated impacts can dislodge or crack them.

A crown encases the entire tooth, it can be made of metal, porcelain, a combination of both and there are still patients asking for gold crowns.

It is usually around double the thickness of the veneer, making it more durable and resistant to cracking than a veneer. It can also be around double the cost, but there is also a lot more dental work that goes into preparing a crown as opposed to a veneer.

CROWNS VS VENEERS DIFFERENCE

The Difference in Preparation

Veneers are considered a more conservative treatment than crowns. Less of the tooth needs to be removed in order to place a veneer. Your teeth after the preparation look more or less similar to your original teeth.

Crowns require more of the existing visible tooth to be trimmed away before the crown can be placed. This typically means two to four times as much of the tooth needs to be removed as opposed to veneers. Also, you will need to wear a temporary crown for 2 – 3 weeks while your crown is being prepared at the dental lab. There are times when Crowns are the best and only choice and a veneer cannot be used.

Crowns are typically needed instead of a veneer when there are more fundamental issues with existing teeth.

These situations include teeth that are badly broken or cracked, or where root canal treatment has been needed.

That means that the nerve has been removed from the tooth and there is no more blood supply to that tooth making it more brittle and therefore needing to be supported by a crown as a veneer would not be strong enough.

The crown is used to keep the tooth intact and protect it from any further damage that might lead to extractions.

Once the crown is cemented firmly into place, it becomes the new outside surface of the tooth with the core of the tooth safely inside the crown.

Crowns are ideal for your back teeth as they are strong and an ideal surface for biting down on.

Crowns can also be matched to your natural colour teeth and can be used in conjunction with veneers to complete your smile.
