Composite Veneers vs Porcelain Veneers

What is the difference between composite and porcelain veneers?

N

We have to start by saying that whatever you do to keep your smile bright and healthy is great! Here are some key benefits of getting veneers:

  • Brighten and whiten your teeth,
  • Achieve a natural-looking appearance,
  • Long-lasting results,
  • Stain-resistant,
  • Durable.
  •

Feature Porcelain Veneers Composite Veneers
Durability Usually can last more than 10 years with proper maintenance On average can last up to 5 years
Strength Chipping Resistance Less susceptible to chipping More susceptible to chipping
Tendency to Discolour They are not porous, much superior colour stability Susceptible to staining due to their porous nature
Cost Higher, but a longer-lasting option Cheaper, short-term alternative
Time of Treatment Relatively longer and will always require more than one visit Relatively shorter and can be done in one visit if changes are minor
Aesthetics Excellent aesthetics, they are custom-made and artistically crafted by a highly skilled ceramist Good aesthetics
Correction Capability Able to correct most aesthetic flaws Great for correcting minor aesthetic flaws

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers before they are applied look a little like fake fingernails and are designed to be bonded to the form of the tooth. Each porcelain veneer is custom-made to each particular tooth and they look and feel very natural. Most of the time people will say “I love your smile”, but they will rarely realise that the smile has been upgraded with porcelain veneers as the results are so natural.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are applied one layer at a time to slowly cover the existing tooth. Each layer is shaped and cured with a blue light by your dentist until the final result is achieved.

This procedure can be done in one appointment as there are no impressions to be sent away to a lab. All existing teeth are worked on in one visit.

In addition to this composite veneers are cheaper than porcelain veneers.

However,

If you have composite veneers that have started to discolor, chip, or stain, you may be wondering if it is time to replace them. Composite veneers are a popular choice for improving the appearance of teeth, but they do not last as long as porcelain veneers.

If your composite veneers are starting to show signs of wear and tear, it is important to see your dentist to discuss your options. In many cases, your dentist may be able to repair the composite veneers. However, if the damage is extensive, you may need to have them replaced.

Porcelain veneers are a more durable option than composite veneers. They are also more resistant to staining, which means that they are less likely to discolor over time. If you are looking for a veneer that will last for many years, porcelain veneers are the best option.

At SmileOn Perth we may provide a combination of composite and porcelain veneers and we will explain all of these options and costs to you at your first visit.
