FAQs
Our team is highly compassionate and professional in dealing with patient’s dental health.
Do my teeth need to be shaved down for porcelain veneers?
At your appointment, the dentist will examine your teeth and explain whether preparation is required in your situation. Clinical examples can be shown to help you understand the steps involved in veneer placement.
How many dental visits are necessary to complete the porcelain veneer process?
At SmileOn Perth, we spend time letting you know everything about the procedure, showing you our before and after photos, and answering all your questions at the initial consultation. If there is no other dental works needed, your second visit will be for the teeth preparation. About 3-4 weeks after the preparation appointment, you will be coming back for the final step, which will be the fitting of your new veneers.
Should I get my teeth cleaned before my second appointment?
If your teeth have not been cleaned within the last six months you should have a professional cleaning done before the second appointment. If you plan ahead, you may be able to schedule both your preparation and a cleaning in one visit.
With porcelain veneers can I use my favorite toothpaste? Will I still be able to floss my teeth?
Porcelain veneers require the same daily cleaning as natural teeth. Brushing and flossing remain important for maintaining oral hygiene and supporting the longevity of the veneers. A low‑abrasion toothpaste is generally recommended to assist with the removal of plaque and surface deposits without excessive wear on the veneer material.
Flossing can continue after veneers are placed. Regular dental examinations and professional cleaning are advised so the dentist can monitor the condition of the veneers, surrounding teeth, and gums.
Can I eat foods like nuts, corn on the cob and apples with porcelain veneers?
We say be careful, yes you can eat the food you love but they are thin porcelain veneers and ongoing sharp pressure on them will cause damage. We always say, take care of them like you would anything precious. We recommend that you should not bite directly on hard foods like nuts, corn on the cob, or apples. Rather, cut these up and enjoy them that way.
How long are they expected to last?
With proper care and maintenance, the average lifespan of a porcelain veneer is expected to be 5-10 years depending on how you take care of them. They are strong, but not indestructible. If you bite on hard objects like, ice, pork crackle, nuts, finger nails, or use them to open bottles etc, they can still break or chip.
If for some reasons, I wanted to remove the porcelain veneers, is that possible?
Normally any cosmetic dental restoration is designed to be long-term. If for some reasons you require them removed, it is still possible. Please check with our dentist with your individual case.
